Take your privacy seriously. I can’t stress this enough. In the world we live in today, a lot of our personal information is stored online or in our smartphones or personal computers.

That said, we need to safeguard our privacy. If not, it is only a matter of time before a hacker gains access to all your passwords and bank information and everything comes crashing down. So how can you take better care of your privacy?

1. Use strong passwords

Seriously, it is 2021 but surprisingly, most people are still using their birthdates or names as their passwords. Honestly speaking, this is such a bad idea that could end up messing you up.

As of now, you don’t even need to remember individual passwords. Whenever a website or application asks for a password, just let Google suggest a password for you which will then be automatically stored in the password vault in your google passwords.

You can also use password generators like https://strongpasswordgenerator.com/ or https://passwordsgenerator.net/ and store them in your google passwords vault which can then be accessed by a master password which is your Google password.

2. Two-factor authentication

Nowadays, it’s not a surprise to hear that someone, maybe even one of your friends, family or a famous celebrity has had one of their accounts hacked.

This is common especially among social media apps such as Facebook and Instagram. Luckily, almost all modern applications and websites will provide you with a two-factor authentication option to provide better security for your account so always make sure you use it.

3. Using a VPN

Now, whenever you are browsing the web, you need to make sure you are always using a VPN. A VPN (Virtual private network) is essentially an app or program masks your IP address and encrypts all the data sent from your phone or computer to a website or any online server. This in turn secures your data from potential hacks and hides your geo-location.

A VPN also allows you to surpass geo-restrictions since your IP address is hidden and by doing so you can access content that is only limited to a certain country. For example, by connecting to a US server, you’ll be able to access the Netflix US library.

4. Enabling bank alerts

If you shop online using your credit or debit card, make sure you’ve enabled bank alerts through texts or email. These alerts will inform you know whenever any payments, deposits and withdrawals are made online through your account.

If you happen to receive any unknown alerts, chances are your account has been hacked and someone is trying to use your money to buy items they need. Should this happen, be sure to reach out to your bank’s customer service and have them take a look at the issue.

In most cases for people who take action early, the money can be easily recovered and given back to the owner, But if you take too long to act accordingly, you might not end up so lucky.

5. Manage app permissions

There are many apps that require permissions in order to run well on your phone or computer. Before installing your applications make sure to have a good look at the permissions before you agree to them because you might end up losing your private details because of your arrogance.

For example, why would a calculator app need access to your contacts or your camera? It doesn’t make sense at all. So that’s another thing you need to think about.
